Labor Day Weekend 2021 Retreat

Christ The Light Of The World

John 8:12
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

The Lord has presented the brothers and sisters of Family Ministries with the opportunity to gather unto Him at the Denton Wesleyan Campground in Denton, Maryland over Labor Day weekend. The facility is large enough to accommodate all who might desire to participate, and we are extending an open invitation. Our brother Ed Miller has a burden from the Lord regarding Jesus as the LIGHT OF THE WORLD. We encourage you to pray about this word and the weekend. We would be thrilled to have you gather with us!

Message for Weekend
I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness." (John 12:46)
“While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."  (John 9:5)

There are many directions one could go meditating on the Lord Jesus as “THE LIGHT.”  However, I have been arrested by the title, “LIGHT OF THE WORLD.”

In the sermon on the Mountain, our Lord Jesus said,
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
(Matthew 5:14)

The very same expression: “Light of the world” is used for both the Lord Jesus and for Christians.

It is helpful to know that there are two different Greek words for “light.”  One Greek word describes the source of light.  Christ is the primary source of Light.
The other Greek word for light has to do with reflection.  It is a light-bearer!  It is not the source of light but the instrument that manifests light. (a lamp, a candle, a torch, etc.)

It was surprising for me to learn when Jesus called His children “The Light of the World,” He did NOT use the lesser word referring to the manifestation of light, but He used the very word that He claimed for Himself.  “I am the light (source) of the world.”  Christians, as far as this dark world is concerned, are God’s provision as the source of light.

How can this be?  This is what is on my heart to share. I want to share how Christ, the Source of Light for the world now indwells us and becomes, in us, the Source of Light for the world.

This is wonderfully illustrated by the three candlestick passages in the Bible.

We will look at the golden lampstand in the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:31-40 and Exodus 37:17-29); we will also meditate on the golden lampstand in Zechariah’s vision (Zechariah 4:2-14); we will also consider the seven golden lampstands representing the seven churches in Revelation 1-3.

Each of these “LAMPSTAND STORIES” I believe, shed additional light on what it means for the Lord Jesus to be the LIGHT OF THE WORLD IN US AND THROUGH US.
